POLYRHYTHMIC BODY workshop

THE POLYRHYTHMIC BODY w/alina sokulska

[workshop in LYON]

The original workshop was designed by alina sokulska, and it has developed from the artist's experiments with jazz music and social dances, as well as with improvisation and spontaneous composition in contemporary dance.

The process of the POLYRHYTHMIC BODY encompasses various approaches to rhythm and musicality in dance expression and includes activities that develop the ear, attention, coordination, body awareness, and activation of our usual jazz dance language in unexpected perspectives of contemporary dance. The practices proposed during the intensive will lead us to make unconventional decisions about the relationship between the body and music, as well as to explore new ways of organizing the flow of time in our dance.

MEET THE TEACHER:

Ukrainian with Syrian roots, born in Kyiv and based in Barcelona, alina sokulska is a choreographer, dance & performance artist, researcher & pedagogue. She holds an MA in Literary Studies, a PhD in Comparative Literature and Performance Studies, and has also studied choreography at the Conservatory of Dance of the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. Currently, she continues her artistic research through movement and is the resident artist at the creation center GRANER in 2025, in Barcelona.

Her creative work includes both solo and group choreographies, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations with other art forms such as music and visual arts. alina’s choreographic experience, particularly in live settings with jazz and improvised music, has shaped her movement language and driven her to develop a unique approach to rhythm and bodily expression in dance improvisation and spontaneous composition. For 17 years in swing dance scene in particular, alina managed to establish her dance language, navigating between social jazz dances as swing, bebop, UK jazz and contemporary dance, proposing to the students a fresh look on the movement expression and music choices within jazz and swing dance community.
